Trade Flow Analysis (wheat grain, wheat flour & edible oil)

In the framework of the Regional Fortification Project in Central Asia Republics (CAR) and Afghanistan, GAIN commissioned Altai Consulting to conduct different activities: (i) A regional trade flow analysis of wheat grain, wheat flour and edible oil in CAR, Pakistan and Afghanistan. The specific objectives of this analysis were to: map quantities produced and consumed, with a focus on Kazakhstan and Pakistan; estimate export volumes and countries of destination (with a focus on Afghanistan); estimate import volumes and countries of origin; (ii) Conduct a detailed assessment of large-scale mills in Kazakhstan that export wheat flour to Afghanistan and more specifically map the production capacities and actual quantities produced; list equipment and/or process changes needed to ensure fortification requirements are fulfilled; assess the technical capacity of production personnel and extent and type of training required; (iii) Conduct a detailed assessment of large-scale mills and edible oil refineries in Pakistan that export to Afghanistan (same specifications as for Kazakhstan).
