Large-Scale Food Fortification Country Assessment: Haiti
Altai was commissioned to assess the market of fortified food vehicles in Haiti (salt, edible oil, wheat flour, bouillon cubes) and explore the feasibility of fortifying additional food vehicles (rice, pasta, sugar, akamil).
The objectives of the assessment were to understand the dynamics of the food processing sector for each target food vehicle, estimate the consumption of each food vehicle, evaluate the local production levels, as well as the import dynamics for each food vehicle, map the main local processors and importers on the market, assess markets shares of the main food processors and brands, evaluate the food processors’ perception of fortification, corresponding constraints and how the current political situation has impacted fortification in the country, explore the feasibility of fortifying additional food vehicles by analysing the processors, flows and consumption, and assess the current levels of fortification in fortified foods vehicles by collecting hundreds of samples and testing them in a laboratory in Guatemala.
This project aimed to generate up-to-date data in a highly complex environment to assess the current situation of companies and determine the most effective ways to support fortification in future programmes.
