Keeping the Lights On. A Study of Repayment and Impact in the PayGo Solar Market

As part of GOGLA's Keeping the Lights On initiative, Altai Consulting conducted a study in Kenya and Uganda to better understand (i) the root causes of non-payment for PAYGo solar home systems (SHS), and (ii) effective practices for default management. The research combined mixed methods: a quantitative survey of over 2,600 customers facing payment challenges, 12 in-depth interviews with users, and five Key Informant Interviews with SHS companies. The findings, along with their recommendations, were published in a public report and presented during an official GOGLA workshop.
