Altai Consulting has developed a broad range of methodologies to ensure that social research directly supports aid & development programs in their design & implementation phases. Based on quantitative & qualitative research tools (surveys, key informant interviews, focus group discussions, cases studies & observations, etc.) our studies are designed to lead to practical recommendations.

Examples
Optimizing the integration of returnees on the Iraqi labor market, for IOM – 2010
Altai Consulting is conducting a 5 months research study in northern Iraq (7 Governorates) to analyze the absorption capacity of the local economy, the needs of local enterprises, and identify relevant local partners for IOM (employment agencies, training centers, micro-finance organizations, etc). The project aims at helping IOM improve their current return and integration programs, and identify opportunities to upscale them, to anticipate on future flows of return on the Iraqi labor market. In 2010, 5 millions Iraqi are still displaced or in exile, and many are expected to return to their homes in the coming years.
KAP study on reproductive health, for USAID/Compri-A – 2007
Through Compri-A, USAID and Constella Futures are supporting a range of hygiene and reproductive health products that are designed, distributed and promoted in Afghanistan in support to national reproductive health policy. Altai Consulting was mandated to conduct a large scale KAP study with a sample of 5,000 Afghans in 7 Provinces, in order to provide the program with sound baseline information.
Moving out of poverty survey, for the World Bank – 2007
Altai Consulting conducted research for the World Bank as part of the Moving out of Poverty project. This study, held in 17 countries, aims at learning retrospectively from those who were once poor but have moved out of poverty and stayed out of poverty. It seeks to enhance understanding of the interactions and sequencings that unleash poor people’s economic potential and support broad-based transitions out of poverty.
Afghan prisons assessment, for JSSP – 2006
This in-depth survey of all the provincial capitals prisons included interviews with prison management plus observations in the prisons. The scope of the survey covered the physical infrastructure, security, operations, personnel and organization of the prisons.
Other social research studies include studies on girls’ education, child labor, child trafficking, disability, mental illnesses, iodine deficiency, etc.
